Brewpubs & restaurants contend for the prestigious Chowder Cup at the third annual Chowder Challenge.
A dozen Portland brewpubs and restaurants will vie for the coveted Chowder Cup at the third annual Chowder Challenge. The blind tasting competition will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28 from Noon to 6 p.m. at the Fifth Quadrant, 3901-B N Williams Ave. Admission is $10, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Locks of Love.
New England-style clam chowders (no Manhattan allowed) will compete for the prestigious People’s Choice Chowder Cup, along with prizes in other categories including Most Authentic, Most Flavorful and Best with Beer. The Morrison Hotel set the bar in the last challenge, sweeping all categories and wresting the cup away from the inaugural winner, The New Old Lompoc.
The festivities will also feature a beer garden, live music, a rootbeer garden, Joe the Balloon Guy, and food for purchase. Minors are welcome at the event.
Samples of chowder from 12 area brewpubs and restaurants will be served in non-labeled, two-ounce cups. After tasting all entries, attendees will vote for their favorite. The chowder receiving the most votes will be named the People’s Choice Winner and will take home the coveted Chowder Cup. Celebrity judges will determine the winners of the other three categories.
The New Old Lompoc family of pubs will represent the Home Team: the New Old Lompoc, the Hedge House, the Fifth Quadrant, and the Oaks Bottom Pub.
The Challengers will be announced soon.
