Drinking beer is not a sin.

This tax will benefit the macro breweries at the expense of local craft breweries.

Posted by: Stephanie Miller 2.17.2009

I vehemently disagree with the proposed beer tax hike.

Posted by: Michael J Whitbeck 2.18.2009

The State of Oregon has already chased off all of our other major businesses. Don’t chase off the last one that brings any notoriety to our state.

STOP THE FAR REACHING ARM OF GOVERNMENT!!

Posted by: Robin LaRouche Briggs 2.18.2009

Don’t raise the Beer Tax. We don’t need more lost jobs!

Posted by: Teresa Alexander 2.18.2009

I will no longer be able to buy beer if this tax is passed. I don’t want more people to lose their jobs either.

Posted by: Karen Benedick 2.18.2009

I support this petition

In these challenging times, why undercut a world-class level industry and its corresponding economic benefits (as well as the less-tangible recognition and goodwill) it earns our state?

Posted by: Anthony Cranford 2.18.2009

Representatives Cannon and Dembrow, Senators Dingfelder, Rosenbaum and Morrisette and any other person voting for this bill represent what is wrong with government. Use this petition, make a call or send an email to let your opposition be known, but let it be felt next election day.

A 2,000% tax increase on anything for any purpose is abusive and irresponsible. Keep the government out of your pockets, take a stand!!!

Posted by: Dave Hodson 2.18.2009

If the beer tax is raised, people are going to buy less beer and the local breweries are going to produce less and more people are going to be out of work. I’m not sure that’s what we want to happen. I say tax beer imported into the state, not what’s brewed here!

Posted by: Greg Doss 2.18.2009

No Tax.

Posted by: Abram Goldman-Armstrong 2.18.2009

Don’t raise the tax on Oregon brewers. Oregon’s craft beer industry is one of the things that makes Oregon great.

Posted by: Adam Cocker 2.19.2009

I whole heartedly oppose this beer tax increase. This has got to be one of the stupidest propositions to ever make in such an economic crisis. I as well as many others know that craft beer is not causing substance abuse if anything it has made people aware that you can drink responsibly and teach your kids to drink responsibly, when of age, by setting a good example. I’m sure that the money that would be collected from this tax would not go towards treatment but to the general fund sinking ever further into the endless pit of debt that our government has created. This is nothing but a sin tax written by people that have a failed world view of morals.

Posted by: William Crawford 2.19.2009

Down here in Florida we drink a lot of Oregon brewed beer from Full Sail, Rogue and many others. They are already some of the most expensive beers we drink and as money gets tighter, the less we can afford to drink them. More taxes will eliminate these fine brews from our budget, which will cause my store to not order them anymore, which in turn will cut the breweries sales and one by one you will lose these companies.Do you really want to eliminate more jobs during these tough economic times? I visited your state two years ago and I am returning this summer. Visiting the breweries is as big a part of my vacation as getting to the coast or going to the waterfalls on the way to Hood River or seeing Mt. Hood. Find your revenue elsewhere, don’t ruin one of the best parts of Oregon,YOUR BEER!!!!

Posted by: Wade Fauth 2.19.2009

This tax would seriously increase the cost of operating any brewery in the state. That would lead directly to higher beer cost, decrease in sales, and loss of jobs… in particular… MINE and my friends who are and have worked really hard to make this a great beer state.

Please do not do this!

This law is absurd. What moron would tax their own product. It’s like the US placing a new internal tax on GM cars which doesn’t apply to Toyota. The long term effect would clearly include people reverting to beer from other states both in Oregon and nationwide, loss of revunue for Oregon breweries, LOSS OF JOBS IN OREGON, LOSS OF TOURISM IN OREGON, and eventually fewer breweries in Oregon (both old and new).

Posted by: Mark E. Hedrick 2.19.2009

Dear sirs and madames,
Oregon is known all over the world for it’s craft beers and it’s disinguished craft beer drinkers. The breweries employ a substantial amount of people to make these craft beers and bring a substantial amount of revenue to Oregon coffers. Would you have it be known that Oregon tossed aside these beer drinkers, breweries and their employees just to try to bail out a mess that was not of our making?
This tax will hurt these breweries, their employees, the stores that sell their product and the consumer.
Please find another way to fix the current financial issue, something that will be long term and won’t hurt so many people.

Posted by: Kent Kaufman 2.20.2009

What are our legislators thinking? We finally have a good prosperous business in Oregon and they want to over tax it. Good luck keeping the breweries in the State of Oregon. I wish they could realize the way they are hurting businesses. (Way to stimulate the economy!)

Posted by: Gordon Feighner 2.20.2009

Name one other tax increase in history as high as 1900%. Oh, that’s right, you can’t.

Posted by: Chris Sandberg 2.20.2009

This is a ridiculous tax and should never be considered.

Posted by: Peter Szekely 2.20.2009

Legislators, don’t do this, the voters will be very angry!

Posted by: Greg Perks 2.20.2009

Tax at the tap, by the pint

Posted by: Steve Roesch 2.21.2009

The lack of availability of hops has already driven this comodity high enough.

Posted by: Thomas Lake 2.22.2009

Beer, wine, and spirits have become a craft in Oregon. Let’s keep it that way by keeping the taxes right where they are – low.

Posted by: Jeremy Rogers 2.24.2009

Taxing Oregon producers in an industry in which the state enjoys a competitive advantage is a mistake. Its not sound economics.

Why don’t we tax the consumer at the store or the bar? Then producers wouldn’t have to pay the tax on beer that they export, and they wouldn’t pay the tax for beer that isn’t consumed.

If you want tax beer, tax the people who drink it, not the producers.

Posted by: Aaron Kiser 2.24.2009

Good beer is a right to peopl in a place where so many take the brewing process into their own hands. keep Oregon beer friendly. (and cheap)

Posted by: Dave McClure 2.24.2009

NO to the beer tax! This is an outrage!

First, it is the wrong time, why ask people for even more at a time when they have less? Why single out beer? Why such a large increase? Why does no one acknowledge the recent increases in the cost of manufacturing beer (hop prices due to shortage for one) which has already led to increased prices?

This increase will have a detrimental effect on one of Oregons most unique industries, it will cost jobs, breweries will close, and will overall harm the culture that Oregon should take pride in. It is part of Oregons brand and this would damage it.

Everyone has to take their lumps in this economy. It’s not forever, the economy will recover, funds will return, we as taxpayers have taken the brunt of decreased services and personal security, please don’t make one the few remaining simple pleasures more cost prohibitive….already did the “staycation”, getting tired of sacrificing. My family will not vote for anyone that supports this increase!

I support this petition

Let’s help the system not hurt it even more. This tax is overzealous!

Posted by: Sam Mercer 2.25.2009

No on Tax.

Posted by: Michael Headley 2.25.2009

I am firmly against the proposed new tax on beer. It is unfair especially to the small brewer. The only thing I see coming from this is lost jobs and less people able to afford the simple pleasure of a beer.
I will not support any one in the legislature who votes in favor of HB2461.

Posted by: Brewery Stiff in BC 2.26.2009

WOW CHEERS
I’ll gladly keep brewing beer for myself and friends at no tax (0%)!!!
Are we to welccome back the dirty 30’s ?!?
We in Canada support your cause Oregon, and we love you and your support of real beer !

Posted by: Mark Seghetti 2.26.2009

Typical, stop raising taxation and just figure out how to manage the money that you already receive from the taxpayers!

This bill can only lead to the demise of many small breweries….Oregon cannot afford to keep the trend of killing businesses!

Posted by: Bryan Burns 3.5.2009

I supported Ben Canon’s run for representative, and while I agree with most of what else he stands for, this beer tax is a plain bad idea.. I am incredibly proud of Oregon’s craft brew community, and we certainly shouldn’t be penalizing what makes our state so great.

Posted by: John Quinn 3.9.2009

No more talk on increasing beer taxes. I support this petition.

Posted by: Kevin Marsman 3.16.2009

I am no fair weather socialist, but this sin tax even makes me angry. Why are drinking and smoking the only sins we can ever agree on? Stop going to the same tired old wells.

Posted by: Tim 4.1.2009

Completely unfair.

Posted by: Scott Kerkmans 4.2.2009

This is in no way good for the state of Oregon. If the goal here is to raise money to pay for other state projects, this won’t work, because people will be forced to buy less beer.

Posted by: Larry Griffin 4.3.2009

To target a vigorous and important Oregon industry with such an outrageous increase to the beer excise tax is a very shallow, thoughtless grab at easy money. State legislators need to be more insightful as to the ramifications of this insane proposed legislation. NO TO THIS TAX INCREASE!!!

Posted by: Millie MacKenzie 4.4.2009

I strongly oppose this exhorbitant percentage increase in the beer tax. Don’t forget that business employs people! We need strong businesses in Oregon. A huge increase in tax to beer mfgrs. would be a discouragement to Oregon business.

Posted by: Beth Johanson 4.7.2009

Please, please, PLEASE vote against this tax!

I know that as an Oregonian, I am not the only one proud of our unique NW microbrews. This industry is essential to our economy as well as our culture, and anything that causes harm to it, hurts Oregon on the whole. The vast majority of Oregon’s microbreweries are owned and operated by small business owners, many of whom simply wanting to share their creations with the world. Few of these small breweries clear much profit, and most have figured this proposed tax would far exceed their gains, making it impossible to stay in business.

Why on Earth would anyone wish to force these “little guys” to shoulder such a disproportionate burden; when the alcohol industry in general has so many larger corporations, deeper pockets and a substantially larger impact on the issues surrounding drug and alcohol abuse (funding for drug/alcohol treatment being the “goal” of the proposed tax)?

Please don’t harm one of our last remaining Oregon industries. The effects could be devastating for many Oregon families and our NW culture in general…

Posted by: Jennifer Allison 4.8.2009

I am in favor of the petition. I say NAY to the Tax.

Posted by: Russ 4.8.2009

I also support this petition.

Posted by: Matt Minjares 4.8.2009

Why would anyone in their right mind propose such a beer tax in Oregon? I say we tax church attendance instead.

Posted by: Sharon Greenwood 4.8.2009

No to the Beer Tax

Posted by: Jerry Wright 4.8.2009

Singling out beer for an outrageous tax increase should be declared a criminal act. It’s for sure stupid, and I think criminally so. As was said earlier, DON’T drive off a blossoming industry that’s a real Oregon asset. Raising taxes when people are already cash-strapped is just foolish. Try cutting some spending for a change, like the rest of us have to!

Posted by: Scott Rowles 4.9.2009

Despite all of the myriad of reasons why we all know this is wrong, have you (legistlators) realized what would happen to the demand on beer once its price jumped significantly higher? Sales would hit the floor, and the demand would shift to other competing goods, wine and spirits. This means that you wouldn’t make much money. The market is more fragile than that, and beer is not completely inelastic. Sales will plummet when you force them to charge that much.

Posted by: Jim 4.29.2009

Adding huge taxes will only cost huge job losses in that industry.Don’t raise beer taxes. The gov needs to cut more.Note:I don’t even drink alcohol!
