Pints for Plants! Laurelwood Brewery’s Green Mammoth Organic Imperial IPA Release Party and Beer-Gardening Benefit for the American Center for Sustainability (ACS). Enjoy fresh beer, live music, raffles, a silent auction, and support a great cause, gardening in Oregon!

Pints for Plants will feature live music from Chickweed—“High-Octane Bluegrass”, Rian O’Hara, Huck Notari, and other local favorites. Certificates for free plants in May will be raffled-off every hour. There will also be a stellar silent auction. Best of all, 100% of the proceeds from sales of Laurelwood’s IPA pints, raffle tickets and auction items go to support the ACS Plant Project. More than 75,000 seeds of fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs have been sown this Spring to be given away to nonprofit garden projects from Astoria to Pendleton and from Portland to Medford. A portion will be available for sale to the public beginning in May. This is the third year of the project. ACS, shifting the “American Dream” into a Sustainable Reality!

Oakshire Brewing Expands
Adds a new Brewmaster

Oakshire Brewing Company of Eugene is nearing completion on a 2,000 square foot addition to its production brewery in Northwest Eugene. The additional space will allow for the immediate installation of three 30-barrel fermentation tanks arriving from Georgetown Brewing of Seattle on Thursday, April 2 – more than doubling Oakshire’s production capacity. According to Jeff Althouse, Co-Founder of Oakshire brewing, “the facility will also allow for the installation of eight significantly larger tanks, likely around 80 barrels each, over the next three years.” A barrel is 31 U.S. gallons or two full-size kegs.

Watershed IPA and Overcast Espresso Stout will be available in 22-ounce bottles as early as July of this year. The company also plans to begin brewing a wide array of Seasonal and Limited Edition beer styles. For this, they’ve hired a nationally
recognized Brewmaster. Matt Van Wyk, formerly of Flossmoor Station Restaurant and Brewery in Flossmoor Illinois, will join Oakshire as the company’s Brewmaster on Monday, March 30. Van Wyk is well known for his recipe development skills across an impressive spectrum of beer styles, from Northwest India Pale Ales to Baltic Porters. He earned the prestigious Small Brewpub Company Brewer of the Year award at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival.

The Barley Cup is a contest for brewers where a random drawing determines the brew style to be crafted. For the patrons and judges, this ensures a full range of beers from which to choose. In keeping with tradition, the Capital City Homebrewers Club determine the overall winner of the Barley Cup trophy. The proud winner goes on to represent McMenamins at the Holiday Ale Festival in downtown Portland in December. Brewers are on hand to answer questions, give tours of the brewery and plead their cases for their own brews.

The Thompson house itself was built in 1905 by Spanish American War veteran Fred Thompson for his father Franklin, a Civil War veteran, and his mother Maria. It is rumored that some of the long-passed Thompsons still hang around, so keep an eye on your beer.
