Celebrate the 2009 Oregon Hop Harvest with the Sixth Annual Fresh Hop Beer “Tastivals”
What:
At least 75 of Oregon’s breweries lie within 100 miles of hop fields, and the annual harvest presents the perfect opportunity for Oregon brewers to demonstrate their unique proximity to one of America’s premier hop growing regions. As a result, Oregon has become the epicenter of ‘fresh hop’ beer production, leading the nation with earthy beers filled with intense herbal, floral and citric aromas, and a pleasing bitterness.
To celebrate these amazing brews, Oregon Bounty and the Oregon Brewers Guild have collaborated to host a statewide series of three Fresh Hop Beer “Tastivals,” each featuring a selection of fresh hop beers from many of Oregon’s top craft breweries. This is a once-a-year chance to taste what Oregon’s finest brewmasters can do with just-picked hops. Sample 25+ of the more than 50 fresh hop beers produced by Oregon’s top craft brewers, large and small.
When & Where:
October 3, Noon to 9pm – Hood River Hops, Hood River
October 10, Noon to 9pm – Oaks Amusement Park, Portland
October 17, Noon to 9pm – 948 Olive Parking Lot, Eugene – 21+ only
Cost:
Admission is free; glasses are $5, and individual tastes are $1 each.
Additional Info:
For more information about the fresh hop tastivals please visit http://oregonbeer.org/fhbt09. A complete list of Oregon’s fresh hop beers can be found at http://oregonbeer.org/fhbl09/.

6th Annual Hood River Hops Fest will feature more than 50 beers from 27 Northwest breweries, including 32 Fresh Hop beers. Hops Fest features live music all day, local food and art vendors, and a Kids Zone to keep the young ones happy.

Fresh Hop beer is made during the short window of hop harvest every year, with straight-from-the-vine hops. Instead of the usual process of immediately drying and sending baled hop cones to cold storage, the fragile fresh hops are taken straight to the brewery and, in most cases, used in the beermaking process that very same day. Fresh hops possess a whole range of aromatics, flavors and resinous textures that are often changed during drying.

The Barley Cup is a contest for brewers where a random drawing determines the brew style to be crafted. For the patrons and judges, this ensures a full range of beers from which to choose. In keeping with tradition, the Capital City Homebrewers Club determine the overall winner of the Barley Cup trophy. The proud winner goes on to represent McMenamins at the Holiday Ale Festival in downtown Portland in December. Brewers are on hand to answer questions, give tours of the brewery and plead their cases for their own brews.
The Thompson house itself was built in 1905 by Spanish American War veteran Fred Thompson for his father Franklin, a Civil War veteran, and his mother Maria. It is rumored that some of the long-passed Thompsons still hang around, so keep an eye on your beer.
