PYRAMID BREWERIES ANNOUNCES OUTBURST IMPERIAL IPA
SPRING SEASONAL 2011

Pyramid Breweries welcomes Outburst Imperial IPA as its new spring seasonal. After debuting in early 2010 as the second offering in Pyramid’s limited-availability, draft-only Ignition Series, this dry-hopped IPA is poised to introduce itself to a wider geography of better-beer drinkers.

A crafty combination of four different hops along with a dose of dry-hopping powers Outburst to 80 IBU strong. Its bold profile offers an aroma reminiscent of the Northwest hop fields at harvest time, along with spicy overtones of fresh citrus. Seeking a harmonious balance to the hop overload, four different specialty malts are blended to create a distinctive deep amber hue, and sweet caramel and roasty flavors.

“Brewed with an astonishing four pounds of hops per barrel, Outburst is a fantastic beer,” said Simon Pesch, Head Brewer at Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley. ”This recipe has been fine tuned for years, and after several refinements and a great launch as part of our Ignition Series, many more hopheads can enjoy the bold taste and complex balance of Outburst this spring.”

Outburst will be available from February – March. Outburst is available on draft, in 12oz and 22oz bottles, 6-packs, 12-packs, and as the seasonal guest in the Winter Variety 12-pack.

Availability: February – March
Style: Imperial IPA
Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Caramel, and Carared

Deschutes Brewery & Public House Plans Bend Expansion
Original downtown Bend, Oregon, brew pub announces makeover for 2012

Deschutes Brewery today announced that it is expanding its original brew pub in downtown Bend, Oregon. The Deschutes Brewery and Public House has been a gathering place and a destination for local beer fans and visitors to Central Oregon for more than 22 years. Due to customer demand, the brewery’s desire to innovate and to make everything possible on-site, the company decided to move forward with increasing its square footage and updating the kitchen.

Mike Cooper, director of food and beverage for Deschutes said, “This expansion provides the opportunity to better serve our customers and reduce wait times for seating. This also gives us a chance for some new exciting upgrades to create a better overall experience for our guests.”

The expansion is slated for two stories just to the south of the brewery’s current location and will include outdoor balcony seating and a small private dining space, in addition to indoor seating. Kitchen upgrades include adding a bakery and an operation for curing meats.

Doug Knight, who designed and developed St. Clair Place downtown in 2000 and has a history of successful projects in Bend’s core, owns the space where the expansion will take place. He said, “I am very excited to be partnering with Deschutes. This expansion is great news for downtown and even better for the Bend community.”
Knight also discussed the appearance of the new building, which he said will feature a brick façade with a beautiful arcade of three towering two-story segmented arches, giving it historical appeal. Inset from the arches will be a more contemporary curtain wall of floor to ceiling glass. Knight said, “It will look like the central utility plants of old, but with a modern twist.”

Construction on the space is slated to begin early next year and open to the public in the first part of 2012. Local companies DKA Architecture & Design and SunWest Builders will be working on the design and construction of the building.

BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, has introduced two exciting new brews, CAFÉ NEGRO and KINGPIN, to its family of award winning beers. CAFÉ NEGRO, a rich coffee infused porter and KINGPIN, a double red ale add a new variety and style of beer to the 26-year-old brewery’s portfolio.

“We crafted these beers after seeing room in our current line-up for cutting edge brews that will complement our ‘heritage’ beers like the IPA or Blue Heron,” commented Jeff Edgerton, BridgePort’s Brewmaster. “We’re really proud to bring these two styles to the ever evolving beer culture of the Pacific Northwest.”

CAFÉ NEGRO Coffee Infused Porter
BridgePort worked with a number of Portland area coffee roasters to formulate its own blend specific to CAFÉ NEGRO that was then infused with the base beer during cold conditioning. The cold conditioning process helps retain subtle coffee aromas otherwise lost during boil and fermentation. CAFÉ NEGRO is brewed with the strong dark flavors of roasted barley and chocolate malt. IBU’s: 30 ABV: 5.5% Color: Dark Brown OG: 13.4%

KINGPIN Double Red Ale:
KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character. IBU’s: 65 ABV: 7.5% Color: Red OG: 17%

The Barley Cup is a contest for brewers where a random drawing determines the brew style to be crafted. For the patrons and judges, this ensures a full range of beers from which to choose. In keeping with tradition, the Capital City Homebrewers Club determine the overall winner of the Barley Cup trophy. The proud winner goes on to represent McMenamins at the Holiday Ale Festival in downtown Portland in December. Brewers are on hand to answer questions, give tours of the brewery and plead their cases for their own brews.

The Thompson house itself was built in 1905 by Spanish American War veteran Fred Thompson for his father Franklin, a Civil War veteran, and his mother Maria. It is rumored that some of the long-passed Thompsons still hang around, so keep an eye on your beer.
