Deschutes Brewery Names Two New Brewmasters
Two brewers who have been critical in the success of the Bend, Oregon brewery step into new, expanded roles
27 October 2011 – Bend, Oregon –Deschutes Brewery has promoted Cam O’Connor and Brian Faivre to two newly formed brewmaster positions. The two, who have been instrumental in the development of such game-changing brews as Hop in the Dark, Red Chair NWPA, Gluten Free Ale, the soon to be released Chainbreaker White IPA, and others, were chosen for their abilities to both innovate and lead.
“Pushing boundaries and experimenting with new beers is what defines us as a company,” said Gary Fish, president and founder of Deschutes Brewery. “Brian and Cam have been instrumental in creating many of the new beers that have been brought to our fans over the last few years. The fact that we were able to promote from within the brewing department is a testament to the strong team of brewers we have here at Deschutes, and we are looking forward to seeing their creativity continue in their expanded roles as brewmasters.”
Cam (pictured below in the brewhouse) was the first brewer at the Portland pub when it opened in 2009, has been responsible for crafting many of the exclusive experimental beers served there. He has also worked on labors of love like Hop in the Dark, which wasn’t released formally until it had gone through 22 rounds of tinkering. He joined the company in 2004 after spending a couple of years with Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Cam holds a bachelor of arts in biology with a minor in chemistry, and has completed the University of California Davis Master Brewer Program.
Brian (pictured below with hop bales) has been with Deschutes Brewery for five years and worked in various roles in the brewing department, most recently as assistant brewmaster for production technology. With a background in computer science and software development, Brian brings this precision to the brewhouse – optimizing recipes and developing operating procedures. He holds a bachelor of science in computer science and has also completed the University of California Davis Master Brewer Program.
Both Brian and Cam have played critical roles for the past several years in the ongoing success and growth of Deschutes Brewery. In their new roles as brewmasters, they will continue to help guide the development of the company’s future.

Throughout the evening expect on-stage costume contests and amateur burlesque with prizes like gift cards and swag to Burnside Brewing. Costumes strongly encouraged though not required.
Brought to you by Burnside Brewing, Maletis Beverage, Yelp and Ninkasi Brewing this year’s celebration brings together seven of Oregon’s best breweries with some unique holiday themed beers. However this years party is not limited to just beer, we will have a full bar with liquor and drink specials too!
Beer List:
Burnside Brewing: Permafrost – is Burnside Brewing Co.’s first winter elixir. It’s a big strong ale brewed with 7 different malts and copious amounts of Columbia and Amarillo hops pillowed in the middle to give this warming brew a chewy complex malt body and a unique fruity juicy hoppiness throughout. You wont want to sip this dangerously strong and tasty beer like you should but pound it . 8.3% abv 77.4 IBU
Burnside Brewing: Peanut Butter Chocolate Alt – A one-off keg of Burnside Brewing’s take on the traditional German-style Alt bier malty and carmelly with reese’s peanut butter cups infused into the beer to complement the creamy body and nutty dry finish. It’s all the favorite flavors of Halloween candy you loved as a kid infused into your favorite adult beverage!
Fort George Brewery: North V – This year we took another Holiday Icon, The Fruitcake, and designed our Winter Seasonal in its’ honor. A mash of barley, oats, wheat, rye, rich caramel and honey malts are mildly spiced with Cascade and Saaz hops, fermented with Fort George House Yeast then allowed to condition on hand-splintered, rum inspired oak. A Glase Fruit concoction that includes cherries, pineapple, orange and lemon peel is dissolved into the finished beer to add the final touches.
While designed and bottled to age, we are sure this version of the Fruitcake will not be passed down for generations, but opened and imbibed at many a cheerful gathering. 7.5% abv. IBU’s Hard To Tell
Oakshire Brewing: Big Black Jack (Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter) – Oven roasted pumpkins, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and ginger round out this burly Imperial Porter. Trick…. or Treat?
Lompoc: 2010 Bourbon Barrel Aged Monster Mash – this batch was aged in Bourbon barrels for 11 months and cellared for an additional two. This Imperial Porter has a slight Bourbon aroma with chocolate and licorice flavors finishing with vanilla notes (8% ABV).

The Barley Cup is a contest for brewers where a random drawing determines the brew style to be crafted. For the patrons and judges, this ensures a full range of beers from which to choose. In keeping with tradition, the Capital City Homebrewers Club determine the overall winner of the Barley Cup trophy. The proud winner goes on to represent McMenamins at the Holiday Ale Festival in downtown Portland in December. Brewers are on hand to answer questions, give tours of the brewery and plead their cases for their own brews.
The Thompson house itself was built in 1905 by Spanish American War veteran Fred Thompson for his father Franklin, a Civil War veteran, and his mother Maria. It is rumored that some of the long-passed Thompsons still hang around, so keep an eye on your beer.
