Breakside Brewery wins silver medal at Great American Beer Festival, announces upcoming seasonal releases

Breakside Brewery (820 NE Dekum) recently claimed a silver medal for its classic Irish-style Dry Stout at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival competition, the largest national beer competition recognizing the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 83 beer-style categories were announced October 1 at the 30th annual Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

The 2011 Great American Beer Festival competition winners were selected by an international panel of 169 expert judges from record number of 3,900 entries received from 522 U.S. breweries.

The Breakside brewing team of Ben Edmunds and Sam Barber are also excited to announce the release of several new brews for October as well as the return of one of their popular past beers. Today, the brewery releases its Dark Mild, a traditional low alcohol brown ale. Tapping later this week will be a Farmhouse Golden designed for St. Jack Restaurant (2039 SE Clinton). This blended brew uses a persnickety French saison yeast strain and was partially fermented on fresh tarragon. The beer is the second in the series of collaboration beers that Breakside began in August with some of Portland’s top chefs. The beer will be available both at the brewery and at St. Jack. Later in the month, expect to see a traditional English IPA and a Belgian-style beer called Ambrée, a malty red ale made with elderflower and elderberry.

Returning from the vault of ‘beers of the past’ is Breakside’s Strong Northwest Saison. Originally brewed with the staff of Saraveza, this beer is a hybrid of a French saison and an American-style double IPA. All of these beers will be available throughout October at Breakside’s pub as well as at select beer bars and restaurants around Portland.

WILLAMETTE VALLEY FRESH HOP FESTIVAL: BEER BREWED WITH LOCAL FRESH HOPS OCTOBER 8 IN EUGENE

Eugene, Ore. – The Willamette Valley Fresh Hop Festival featuring beers brewed in Oregon with fresh hops is on tap for Saturday, October 8, 2011 in the Wheeler Pavilion of the Lane Events Center, located at 796 West 13th Avenue, Eugene.

Sponsored by Hop Union, BC Hop Farms, Sodbuster Farms and the Oregon Brewers Guild, the Willamette Valley Fresh Hop Festival will begin at 12 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door and includes a logo glass and two taste tickets. Additional taste tickets will be available for purchase for $1 for each ticket. Guests must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

Patrons will be able to taste more than 25 beers brewed by Oregon breweries with fresh hops, rather than hop pellets, and hop forward brews, which are beers brewed with a generous helping of hops added throughout the boiling process to draw exuberant flavors and aromas from hops, sometimes also dry-hopped to boost the hop aroma.

Hops, the female flower clusters (commonly called seed cones or strobiles), of a hop species, Humulus lupulus, are a natural preservative and act as the primary contributor to beer flavor and aroma. Described as floral, herbal, spicy or citrus, hops are capable of imparting nearly any flavor and are considered the “spice of beer.” According to the Oregon Hop Commission, Oregon is the second largest hop producer in the United States, with Washington first and Idaho third.

For more information about Oregon Hops, please visit http://oregonhops.org and http://www.hopunion.com.

For information on Oregon’s Fresh Hop Fests go to www.oregonbeer.org/fhbt2011

The beer festival will also feature live music, food vendors, and informative Oregon hop and beer booths.
