Oregon Brewers Festival raises a mug in a toast to its 25th annual year of celebrating craft beer
Festival to feature 84 beers in main tent, another 40 in the Buzz Tent and debut a new Sour Beer Tent
PORTLAND, Ore. – On a sun-soaked July afternoon, there’s no better place to sip suds with friends than the Oregon Brewers Festival, one of the nation’s longest-running and best-loved craft beer festivals. Nearly 80,000 fans will travel from points around the world to take part in the 25th annual event, July 26 through July 29 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. Event hours are Noon to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and Noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.
From Belgians to Browns, Doppelbocks to Dunkels, Pales to Pilsners and Scottish ales to Stouts, the Oregon Brewers Festival serves up more than 20 beer styles from 82 craft breweries from around the country. There are 84 beers in the main tent – one per brewery plus two gluten-free offerings – and another 40-plus in the Buzz Tent. This year, organizers have also announced they will add a Sour Beer Tent to the festivities, bringing awareness of one of the latest craft beer trends to a massive audience.
The Oregon Brewers Festival is first and foremost a celebration of beer, but the event also features four days of live music, food booths, craft vendors, and industry displays. The Crater Lake Soda Garden provides complimentary handcrafted root beer to minors and designated drivers. Minors are allowed into the event when accompanied by a parent. Admission into the festival grounds is free. In order to consume beer, purchase of a 2012 souvenir mug is required and costs $6. Mugs from previous years will not be filled. Beer is purchased with wooden tokens, which cost $1 apiece. Patrons pay four tokens for a full mug of beer, or one token for a taste.
Alternative modes of transportation are encouraged, with free monitored bicycle parking available each day. The main entrance is at SW Oak Street and Naito Parkway, one block from the MAX Light Rail line.
The Oregon Brewers Festival takes place during Oregon Craft Beer Month, a celebration of craft beer by Oregon’s specialty breweries. During the entire month, a variety of special events will take place at craft breweries throughout the state, culminating with the Oregon Brewers Festival.
The Oregon Brewers Festival was founded in 1988 as an opportunity to expose the public to microbrews at a time when the craft brewing industry was just getting off the ground. Today, that industry has flourished, especially in Oregon, which has 107 brewing companies operating 139 brewing facilities in 55 cities. Portland alone has 48 breweries – more than any other city in the world. For more information about the Oregon Brewers Festival, visit www.oregonbrewfest.com.

$5/glass-$1.50/tasters
Beer From
Astoria Brewing – Astoria, Oregon
Bitter Bitch – Imperial IPA – 8.2% ABV-A big IPA with a huge bite.
Beer Valley Brewing – Ontario, Oregon
Leafer Madness – Imperial Stout – 11% ABV-Leafer Madness Imperial Pale Ale was created during the great hop shortage of 2008, but there is no shortage of hops in this beer.
Highway to Ale – Barley Wine – 10.5% ABV-A celebration of the pioneering spirit and long tradition of brewing in the great state of Oregon. Aged in the bottle for months before it is released, Highway To Ale is rich in malt character with a unique blend of citrusy, floral hops in the finish.
Bend Brewing Company – Bend, Oregon
Sexi Mexi – Imperial Stout – 10.6% ABV-Chocolate & Chili Imperial Stout – what more could one ask for?!?
Boneyard Beer – Bend, Oregon
Notorious – Triple IPA – 12% ABV-A beer that is ‘now’ as notorious as its inception. Copper in color and well balanced, this big hoppy triple IPA has a complex malty flavor with layer a-plenty!
Armored Fist – Imperial Cascadian – 10% ABV-Well balance, extremely hoppy black ale.
Double Mountain Brewery and Taproom – Hood River, Oregon
Hop Lava – IPA – 7% ABV-This big, glowing, powerful IPA is packed with assertive Northwest hops that are floral, citrusy and resinous. A healthy dose of Munich malt helps to provide backbone and balance against the hoppy attack.
Goliathon – Dark Belgian Ale – 11% ABV- Rochefort and Kasteel yeast, dark fruit notes, full-bodied.
Heater|Allen Brewer – McMinnville, Oregon
Pils – Bohemian Pilsner – 5.0% ABV-This is our take of the renowned Bohemian-style pale lager that you might find in Bavaria or the Czech Republic. Ours is a little more golden, rounder, and a little more malt driven than many other versions. The beer possesses strong hop character that is balanced by its rich, round, malty palate.
Ninkasi Brewing Co. – Eugene, Oregon
Tricerahops – Double IPA – 8.8% ABV-Tricerahops is double everything you already love in an IPA. More hops, more malt body and a higher gravity define this Double India Pale Ale.
Silver Moon Brewing – Bend, Oregon
Dark Side Stout – Foreign Stout – 6.4% ABV-Jet black color and a foamy head makes this beer inviting to all dark beer fans. Rich and full bodied, Dark Side is a malt forward beer with notes of coffee and chocolate, without the burnt character of a dry stout. We used the choicest English malts and hops to blend this European style beer.
Southern Oregon Brewing – Medford, Oregon
Black Heart – Imperial Stout – 8.5% ABV-Black Heart Imperial Stout is startlingly rich and complex as its roasted, chocolaty malt aromas and flavors are balanced perfectly with Warrior hops. A slight alcohol heat lends a spice to this mammoth beer which finishes with a creamy smooth texture on the palate.
The Commons Brewery – Portland, Oregon
Sticke Double Alt – Secret Alt-A bigger, hoppier brother to the alt. The beer harkens back to the days when recipes were measured in handful’s and buckets. As the story goes, a brewer screwed up his alt recipe by adding too much malt and so
compensated with additional hops. This mistake beer was a secret and only shared with those in the know.
Three Creeks Brewing – Sisters, Oregon
Rudolph Imperial Red – Strong Ale – 8.6% ABV
It’s a big, malty, hoppy red-style ale with ten specialty malts and over twelve pounds of hops.
Vertigo Brewing – Hillsboro, Oregon
Friar Mike’s – IPA – 6.1% ABV-Hand-crafted IPA recipe with help from the Friar himself. Brewed with generous amounts of Columbus, Amarillo, and Cascade hops. An English-style IPA with a Northwest accent

McMenamins’ 19th Annual Hillsdale Brewfest
02/25/12
Hillsdale Brewery & Public House
1505 SW Sunset Blvd
Portland
11am
McMenamins’ Hillsdale Brewfest is a day-long event featuring 22 original beers, along with food specials, revelry, merriment and – most important – a competition for the coveted Belt. The Hillsdale Brewfest is free to attend, begins at 11 a.m. and is open to guests of all ages; those 21 and over may taste the ales.
Twenty-two of the finest ales from McMenamins’ breweries are sent into battle, their brewers vying for bragging rights, the notorious championship belt and a berth in the annual Oregon Brewers Festival. Patrons order “trays” of beer, arranged from lightest to darkest – each of the two trays offers eleven 4-ounce samples. It is our guests’ duty to decide who deserves the coveted title. With seventeen ales from Oregon and five from Washington, these beers cover the spectrum of brew styles – from steam beer to American brown ale, imperial stout to black IPA and beyond. Each taster casts one ballot that lists his or her top three choices.
The victorious brewer at this year’s Battle of the Belt will represent McMenamins at the 25th Annual Oregon Brewers Festival in downtown Portland on July 26–29, 2012. For more information, visit www.oregonbrewfest.com.
